What Is the Mastercard University of Oxford AfOx Scholarships?
The Mastercard University of Oxford AfOx Scholarships support passionate and globally-minded African students to pursue graduate studies at the University of Oxford. This scholarship program is aligned with values such as collegiality and inclusion and aims to help African students access opportunities at Oxford and excel both during and after their studies. It funds a one-year taught Master's program at Oxford, focusing on technical, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills. Scholars benefit from extensive support, life skills training, and an alumni network. The program centers on key themes relevant to Africa's development goals, such as healthcare, sustainability, and innovation.

Eligibility for Mastercard University of Oxford AfOx Scholarships:
The Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarship is open to students from all African countries who wish to pursue graduate studies at the University of Oxford. Eligibility extends to students with African nationality and residence who have received a conditional offer from the University.
Selection Criteria for Applicants:
The scholarship places a strong emphasis on groups that have historically been underrepresented, which includes but is not limited to female scholars, individuals from refugee and displaced backgrounds, and disabled scholars. Special consideration regarding residence will be given to students from refugee and displaced backgrounds.

This comprehensive scholarship is available to Master's students and covers various expenses, including:
- Tuition fees
- Living expenses for international students
- Economy return flight
- Visa and Immigration Health Surcharge fees
- Settling down allowance
- Access to a Thrive Fund for emergencies
In the first year, scholars undertake a rigorous academic Master's course at Oxford and participate in a Leadership and Impact Program, which helps them develop collaborative leadership skills to address complex social and environmental issues.
Upon completing their Master's program, scholars embark on a 4-6 month placement in leading Africa-based organizations during their Ubuntu Period of Service. This allows them to work on initiatives in Africa and receive mentoring from prominent Africa-based academics and practitioners, helping them pave the way for impactful careers in Africa.
Scholars also benefit from a tailored Leadership and Impact Program in partnership with the Skoll Centre for Social Enterprise and receive academic and social support throughout their studies. Beyond academics, they become part of the AfOx Alumni Network, where they can continue to engage with a community of African Scholars associated with the University of Oxford. Additionally, scholars gain access to mentorship and career support from AfOx Research and Innovation Fellows and a broader network of research leaders and entrepreneurs within AfOx.
To apply for the Mastercard University of Oxford AfOx Scholarships, follow these steps:
The Mastercard Foundation's AfOx Scholarship program allows students from any African country to undertake graduate studies at the University of Oxford. All students who hold African nationality and residency and have received a conditional offer from the University qualify for the scholarship. This scholarship specifically prioritizes historically marginalized groups, such as women, individuals from refugee or displaced backgrounds, and those with disabilities, with special attention given to residence requirements for students from refugee or displaced backgrounds.
(a). To be considered for this scholarship, submit your application for graduate study to the University of Oxford via the graduate admissions portal by the deadline for your chosen course of study. Please read the Application Guide in detail ahead of making the application. We strongly recommend you submit your application form and all of your supporting documents at least a week before the December/January for your course.
(b). Eligible candidates who receive a conditional offer from their course will be then invited to apply for the AfOx Graduate Scholarship Program. All invited candidates will be expected to fill in the AfOx Graduate Scholarship questionnaire during the application process.
(c). Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed virtually before decisions are made, and the timelines will be communicated at the interview stage.
